Whistleblower protection: ECJ fines Germany millions - Table.Media

Corruption, data protection, environmental violations: Whistleblowers uncover grievances and often take a high risk to do so. In Germany, they were not adequately protected – now, the European Court of Justice has sentenced Germany and other EU countries to fines.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has sentenced Germany to pay a fine of millions of euros for a delay in protecting whistleblowers. The highest EU judges in Luxembourg ruled that Germany had not fully implemented rules to protect people who report breaches of EU law. Germany must therefore pay a fine of EUR 34 million. In addition to Germany, the Court also fined Luxembourg, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Estonia. Their lump sums were significantly lower.
