With nine weeks before Election Day, a federal whistleblower is raising alarm that the U.S. Postal Service’s rushed implementation of a new and untested system to screen mail ballots, which has been blocked by a federal court, has the potential to upend the upcoming midterm elections.
In a new disclosure made public by Connecticut senator Richard Blumenthal, the unnamed federal official claims that the USPS began work on a new online portal in June with the goal of being operational for a planned September 1 launch date in order to comply with President Donald Trump’s March executive order that introduced new restrictions on mail ballots.
But the whistleblower alleges that the truncated timeline hasn’t allowed for thorough testing of the system, which could result in large swathes of mail-in ballots being rejected or never mailed out to voters at all.
“The apparently sloppy and rushed manner in which the Federal Ballot Mail Portal and supporting IT systems are being built poses significant risk. Potentially millions of American voters may not receive their mail-in ballot this election cycle in a timely manner, or at all. The Whistleblower’s assessment and recitation of the facts around the risky and haphazard development of the project is a compelling warning of catastrophic failure which could derail the midterm elections,” wrote attorneys with
