Whistleblower Reports Lead Contamination in Yellowstone Housing - Koran Manado

A federal whistleblower filed a disclosure with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel on Monday, April 27, 2026, alleging that thousands of Yellowstone National Park employees and their families are being exposed to hazardous lead paint levels in park-provided housing.

The filing, submitted by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) on behalf of an anonymous federal employee, claims that 79% of the park's housing failed to meet federal lead management guidelines. This data comes from a previously unreleased 2025 Lead Hazard Compliance Review conducted within the park.

"Thousands of Yellowstone employees and their families have been and/or are currently being exposed to harmful levels of lead through the paint in their housing," the disclosure stated, as reported by SFGATE and National Parks Traveler. The document notes that many residents remain unwarned of the risks.

Internal reports from 2021 and 2025 indicate that lead paint and dust were found in the majority of housing units at levels exceeding Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. PEER advocates noted that the park is currently the target of an ongoing EPA investigation regarding these safety concerns.
