RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may have illegally accessed the commonwealth’s voter records, a whistleblower alleged.
In early September, a whistleblower report revealed that federal agents may have violated state laws by misrepresenting themselves on public-facing state websites to illegally access individual voter registration records as part of an operation called the “Unlawful Voter Initiative.”
According to Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-Va.), DHS employees were instructed to lie in order to unlawfully obtain Virginians’ personal information.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officers were directed to falsely certify that they were the individual voters whose records they were searching, according to the whistleblower.
“As much as President Trump and his cronies insist otherwise, working for the federal government doesn’t mean you can break the law,” the two state senators said in a joint statement on Monday, Sept. 14. “The Virginia Department of Elections is clear: lying about one’s identity in order to access Virginians’ personal information is illegal, and any DHS officials who violated that code should be held accountable.
