Whistleblower says former Vera House employee, sex offender had access to minors - CNYcentral.com

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A whistleblower says Vera House is not telling the truth about the responsibilities given to a registered sex offender who was employed by them up until August 1.

This comes as New York State is investigating whether former Vera House employee and registered level two sex offender Marcus Jackson came into contact with minors during his time at the nonprofit, despite them claiming he did not.

The whistleblower says Vera House put Jackson in positions to interact with minors against federal rules.

"Vera House is not being upfront or honest with the public. If there is any chance for the agency to rebuild trust with this community they have to be upfront and honest with the people they serve," the whistleblower said in a statement.

This person, who was a part-time Resident Supervisor at Vera House, sent a complaint to the state, which launched their investigation.

Jackson worked at Vera House for nearly two years as an advocate for victims of sexual and domestic violence.

Vera House previously said they knew about Jackson’s sex offender status when they hired him in October 2020, and because of this, he never worked with anyone under 18.

However, CNY Central Investigative Reporter Mary Kielar talked to a former employee who said the organization’s claims are just not true and reached out to the state to report their concerns.
