Whistleblower sues Iowa Lakes Community College for retaliatory firing - MSN

, Iowa () — A former administrative worker at Iowa Lakes Community College is suing the college, alleging that they fired her in retaliation to her blowing the whistle on illegal acts.

The college and other Defendants, Scott Stokes, Arden Kinnander, Bob Jennings, Janice Lund, Pat Kibble, Jane Nolan Goeken, Cure Petersen, and Kari Batman, are accused of wrongful discharge in violation of Iowa Code § 70A.29.

According to court documents, Erin Latona said she witnessed multiple individuals commit acts that violated federal laws and regulations during her time working for Iowa Lakes Community College.

Some of the acts cited in the lawsuit document include intentionally ignoring best practices and management of federal student aid funds, the inflation of enrollment numbers for state aid, false reports about grant money usage, misappropriating funds meant to serve local high school students, and falsely reporting progress on a program the college was supposed to implement with certain grant funds received by the college.

Latona reported what she saw during her time at Iowa Lakes Community College to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in June of 2023. She then submitted a follow-up report to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General. The special investigation into Iowa Lakes Community College is still ongoing.
