How far is too far for a work-from-home arrangement?

The Star was recently contacted by a municipal employee concerned about the city’s remote work policy. They spoke on the condition of anonymity, fearing repercussions.

The individual told The Star an employee in the wastewater division “has been told he is allowed to buy a house in Kapuskasing and work from home. As a taxpayer, how does this happen? How many others did not apply for this job or were turned down because they don’t live in the city? Why is it that unionized employees are told Sturgeon Falls is too far to live to be on-call, yet a non-union, non-manager can work from home in Kapuskasing? Working from home has gone too far this time.”
Google Maps indicates Kapuskasing is more than a five-hour drive from Greater Sudbury, which has angered the employee, who said that is not a good look for the municipality.

“He says it’s too expensive to live here in Sudbury so he bought a house seven hours away, yet still works for the city,” they wrote. “I’m guessing that’s good representation for our city. It doesn’t look too good when someone will not live here because its too expensive, yet has no problems working for a city and getting the wages.”
The individual indicated a wrong-doing complaint was filed at the end of August, but no action has been taken, although it was referred to the human resources department for review.
