COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — After more than two years, the racketeering trial of the man once considered the most powerful in Ohio politics finally began in January.
And now, the whistleblower who started it all has taken the stand, and Tyler Fehrman is speaking freely.
“My hope is that they find them guilty,” Fehrman said Wednesday. He spent a day on the witness stand, the final witness called by U.S. attorneys prosecuting the case against former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and Matt Borges, a lobbyist.
Back in 2019, Fehrman was working with the group trying to repeal House Bill 6, the controversial taxpayer bailout for FirstEnergy’s nuclear power plants -- the same bill Householder allegedly took money from the company to ensure its passage.
Fehrman said Borges wanted inside intel on the repeal effort and dangled money in front of Fehrman.
“He was essentially telling me, if you helped me out, if you give me the information I'm asking for, we can take care of anything and everything you've got that you need taken care of financially,” Fehrman said. “I have no doubt in my mind that Matt's very first meeting with me was an attempt to buy me off. It was a bribery attempt.”
Fehrman went to the FBI and revealed the details. Later he said the situation became frightening.
