According to a document sent to the US Congress, former employees of the Kennedy Center allege that center officials knew of the venue’s leaking infrastructure months before announcing that it was the reason for the building’s impending closure.
From the document’s whistleblower disclosures, $9.3 million was appropriated on July 4, 2025, to repair the center’s terrace roof and undersides, but has allegedly remained unspent due to delays connected to Kennedy Center Executive Director Matt Floca.
The whistleblowers say that Floca stalled the repairs after initially approving the funds as well as an additional $295,000 for a firm to design a replacement for the roof overhangs, adding that “the new problems were well known to Floca, who did not treat them as high priority.”
“Yet six months ago — with the funds in hand — [Floca] stopped the remediation process from moving forward,” writes David Seide, a lawyer for the unidentified whistleblowers, whose letter to Congress is embedded within a larger financial document.
Seide’s letter also included a screenshot of internal Kennedy Center communications, where a request for funding was canceled by Floca in April for unclear reasons.
