STERLING, Ill. (Rockford News First/KWQC) - Following uproar over a decision to euthanize a dog, attorneys for Whiteside County Animal Control Director James Garcia launch an investigation for a potential defamation lawsuit.
The Mertes Law Firm, which represents Garcia, claims several false allegations were made against Garcia when a dog, Starsky, was found unsuitable for adoption and euthanized.
Garcia’s attorneys said several inaccurate accusations were circulated online and in public claiming Garcia was a convicted felon and domestic abuser. His attorneys clarified Garcia has no criminal record.
Attorneys also report Garcia received several death threats over the controversy.

In a statement obtained by KWQC Friday, the Mertes Law Firm said attorneys have begun investigating those who published or continues to publish “defamatory” statements. Garcia’s attorneys say those who have made death threats have been reported to local authorities.
