WIAA suffers shortage of whistle-blowers | High School - Ashland Daily Press

With a growing number of high school winter sports games, meets and matches at risk of being rescheduled or canceled due to a lack of officials, the march is on to find solutions to a problem that seems to magnify with each new season.

According to WIAA officials, about 1,000 additional referees were needed across all Wisconsin high school sports in 2023-2024. The problem isn’t just the quantity of officials, according to Brian Miller, athletic director for the School District of Ashland. It’s also about the volume of games being played on specific nights — think Friday night football, for example, and the demand for referees on this day alone — and a referee’s particular areas of officiating expertise.
