WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning to DJ in Bristol - Bristol24/7

The ex-Iraq intelligence analyst who leaked thousands of US government files to WikiLeaks in 2010 is set to perform a DJ set in Bristol.

Chelsea Manning will be playing at Strange Brew at the end of November as part of the SNOG x TPSW: Official Trans Pride Afterparty.

A heroic whistleblower to some, a national traitor to others, Manning has become one of modern America’s most controversial figures.

Best known for releasing thousands of files which revealed severe human rights abuses and corruption in the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, Manning exploded onto headlines in 2010, and was sentenced to 35 years in military prison.

Manning made history when she became the first American prisoner to undergo gender-affirming hormone therapy in a military prison.

She was released unexpectedly by the then president, Barack Obama, in 2017. Since then, she has continued her work as a technologist, network security expert, analyst and activist, as well as pursuing her love of DJing.

And in a surprising turn of events, it appears Manning’s love of DJing came from a very local source.

In a recent interview with Anthony Fantano from Needle Drop, Manning revealed that while studying at a military school in Wales, she would travel down to Bristol for DnB free parties.

Allegedly it was here that Manning discovered a love for DJing and rave culture that may have sowed the seeds for her...
