Wilmington Mayor Purzycki Says Former Residency Requirement for City Employees Was Undermining the Efficiency of City Government
Mayor says critical City jobs couldn’t be filled because applicants would not accept a residency requirement; says City had to broaden its prospective employee pool
Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki said today that the City’s former residency requirement for City employees was undermining the efficiency of City government because critical positions could not be filled. So, the Mayor said today that Wilmington is hiring new employees without enforcing a residency requirement. The Mayor recently sought legal advice from the City Law Department regarding whether residency exists because City Council has not affirmed its position about residency after being given the authority to do so by the Delaware General Assembly in 2022.
The Mayor thanked Council Member Al Mills and other members of Council who are supporting his Ordinance that will be voted on at Thursday’s meeting. The Ordinance would affirm Council’s decision to eliminate any remaining references to residency.
