RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) — A Wisconsin police deputy was exonerated of false abuse allegations from a public defender after body camera footage proved the deputy’s innocence.
According to a press release, a Wisconsin public defender pled guilty to obstructing an officer after falsely accusing said officer of physically abusing a jail inmate.
“(The public defender) made serious and false accusations against a deputy, calling what he claimed to have witnessed the ‘most flagrant misconduct’ he had ever seen and a ‘disgusting abuse of power’,” said Racine County Sheriff Christopher Shcamling.
“His words were not mistakes, they were intentional false allegations that put a deputy’s thirty-year career and reputation at risk — and could have resulted in a criminal conviction and jail time.”
The incident that the public defender tried to claim was a ‘disgusting abuse of power’ occurred in March, after the public defender and his client, a jail inmate, were granted additional time to speak with each other following court hearings in two criminal cases.
The deputy and his partner saw the inmate begin to wander down the hallway towards the judge’s chambers, and at that point the deputy intervened and told the public defender his meeting was over.
The deputy escorted the inmate down the right hallway towards her quarters and told the public defender he had to leave. The public defender responded by positioning himself in front of the deputy and saying, “I don’t care what you do.”
