KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan University Cooley Law School is anticipated to host a "Michigan's New Expungement Policies - Know Your Rights" expungement fair town hall Friday.
The town hall is in collaboration between Attorney General Dana Nessel, State Representatives Emily Dievendorf and Kara Hope, Senator Sarah Anthony, Safe & Just Michigan, Legal Services of South Central Michigan, and Capital Area Michigan Works!, according to organizers.
Expungement is a process that removes arrests and convictions from a person's public criminal record, officials said.
After expungement, criminal offenses will no longer be made available to employers or landlords, according to WMU - Cooley Law School.
In Michigan, expungements have been allowed, but the "Clean Slate" legislation enacted in 2020 has made more Michiganders eligible for expungement, officials said.
Under the law, Michiganders with up to three expungement-eligible felonies and any number of misdemeanors can have their records expunged, according to WMU - Cooley Law School.
In addition, misdemeanor marijuana convictions that would have not been considered crimes after recreational marijuana became legal in Michigan can be expunged, officials said.
