Woman admits submitting $15K in fraudulent insurance claims - Telegraph-Journal

A Moncton-area woman will be sentenced in February after admitting she defrauded an insurance company out of thousands of dollars.

Angie-Jo Carter, 47, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of defrauding Manulife Insurance and her trial was set for January but the defence brought the case to provincial court on Thursday, where she pleaded guilty.

Sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 13.

Prosecutor Gabin Kabou told the court Carter was an employee of IGT Canada Solutions when the fraud occurred. Company employees had health benefits through Manulife and between September 2021 and February 2022, Carter submitted 23 claims for health services online that were later determined to be false.

He said a Manulife investigator contacted health-care providers to see if Carter or a member of her family had received the services and verified the claims were fraudulent. RCMP were then notified and Carter was charged.

Defence lawyer Wanda Severns told the court the wrong dates were provided to the insurance company for the claims and that the claims were made during a time when Carter didn’t have coverage. The lawyer referred to the conduct as “negligence,” which prompted the judge to ask if Carter was admitting she knowingly made false claims to Manulife or not. The offender responded she did and is guilty.
