A woman in her 50s has been arrested by police for spreading false information online that named prominent politicians and accused them of serious crimes such as prostitution, drug use, and murder.
Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced on the 4th that they had apprehended and detained Ms. A, a woman in her 50s, on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act.
From August to September 2024, Ms. A posted three articles on social media (SNS) falsely claiming that specific politicians who had served as party leaders and floor leaders committed murder, sex crimes, and corruption.
In her posts, she wrote, “Lawmaker B consumed drugs at a prostitution establishment and murdered someone,” “Lawmaker C received bribes worth tens of billions to hundreds of billions of won,” and “Lawmaker D sexually assaulted dozens of people,” among other false allegations.
The political parties affiliated with the mentioned lawmakers filed complaints, prompting the police investigation. To prevent secondary harm, the police did not disclose the names of the lawmakers or their affiliated parties.
A police official stated, “We will strictly enforce measures against the dissemination of false information that disrupts community order and causes social conflict and chaos.
