Woman in Her 50s Arrested for Posting False Claims of "Assembly Member Committed Murder" - 아시아경제

A woman in her 50s has been arrested for repeatedly posting false claims on social media that major politicians had committed crimes such as murder, sexual assault, and bribery.

On July 4, Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that they had detained a 55-year-old woman, identified as A, on suspicion of defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

According to the police, between August and September 2024, A allegedly posted three articles containing false information about three politicians who were members of the Democratic Party of Korea at the time, using her social media account.

The investigation found that, without any evidence, A posted content claiming that a certain member of the National Assembly had murdered someone after using drugs at a prostitution establishment, as well as posts alleging that they had accepted bribes amounting to billions to hundreds of billions of won. She also posted false articles suggesting that another assembly member had sexually assaulted dozens of people.

If someone damages another person's reputation by spreading false information through information and communications networks for the purpose of defamation, they may be subject to up to seven years of imprisonment, up to ten years of disqualification, or a fine of up to 50 million won.
