SEOUL, July 10 (Yonhap) -- A woman in her 50s has been arrested for spreading false information accusing prominent politicians of committing crimes, such as sex and drug trafficking, police said Friday.
The Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station said the 55-year-old suspect, whose identity is being withheld, was sent to the prosecution Friday morning on charges of defamation under the information and communications network law.
She is accused of claiming on her social media account three times between August and September 2024 that certain politicians who served as party and floor leaders committed murder, sexual crimes and corruption.
Her posts contained false claims, including that one lawmaker took drugs at a prostitution establishment and murdered someone, another accepted bribes worth hundreds of billions of won, and a third sexually assaulted dozens of people.
The police launched an investigation after the concerned political parties filed a complaint, and the woman was put under arrest last week. The police did not identify the victims out of concern for secondary harm.
