Women Are Already Living Work/Life Integration. Is the Workplace? - SHRM

The concept of work/life integration positions work and personal life not as competing forces but as interconnected realms that employees navigate simultaneously. To that end, SHRM previously spoke with Tracy Brower, author of The Secrets to Happiness at Work (2024) and vice president of workplace insights at Steelcase, who describes work/life integration as the foundation of a genuinely fulfilling life. Yet for women managing full-time careers alongside full-time responsibilities at home, work/life integration is less an aspirational framework than a daily reality they have already been living without the label.

Women are well-accustomed to integrating their personal and professional lives, even if they have never used the term work/life integration. They adhere to the concept almost on autopilot: sending kids off to school, leading a 9 a.m. strategy session, back-to-back meetings, focused work, more meetings, after-school pickup, activities, dinner, housework, and then preparing to do it all again the next day. There’s no question whether women can integrate work and life. They’re great at this. What isn’t as clear, however, is whether their workplaces meet them with equivalent attention paid to work/life integration.
