WOODS CROSS, Utah (KUTV) — Woods Cross City on Tuesday announced Chief of Police Chad Soffe had been placed on administrative leave and that an interim chief had been appointed.

In fact, the chief had been on leave for nearly three weeks.

The statement came four days after Soffe implied in a Facebook post that he was leaving law enforcement completely, though his post fell short of stating it expressly.

"I started my police service in 1979 as a Murray Police cadet," he wrote in a post that included a collection of photos from his service spanning decades. " 44 years later, 37 full time years it’s time to call it."

The wording was just vague enough as to not say he was quitting, retiring or otherwise, though it wrapped up with a sense of finality.

"When you know, you will know," he wrote. "A big thanks to all the officers I met and worked with along the way. I will pray for your continued safety as you serve. God Bless."

2News has reached out to Soffe multiple times for clarification. He has declined to comment.

According to the city, Soffe was still an employee as of Aug. 15, and he was listed as the city's chief of police in 2023 on Utah's wage transparency site.

It wasn't made clear why he was placed on leave.

"The City does not comment on personnel issues related to its employees, other than to confirm employment status, to ensure that employees’ rights are protected," according to the statement from City Administrator Bryce Haderlie.
