The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) announced on the 4th that it has issued a corrective order and imposed a penalty of 5,000,000 Korean won on Yanadoo for false advertising regarding scholarship amounts, number of recipients, and effectiveness provided to course enrollees without objective grounds while selling online English lecture products on its website.
According to the KFTC, Yanadoo has been operating a scholarship program since May 2014, where enrollees receive scholarships for completing lectures, writing reviews, etc. However, it was revealed that Yanadoo used false and deceptive advertising regarding scholarship amounts, number of recipients, and effectiveness to attract consumers starting from December 2023.
First, Yanadoo advertised on the homepage’s initial screen from December 2023 to November of the following year, stating, “Already surpassed 8.8 billion won! A whopping 160,000 people have received scholarships!” While Yanadoo proved the 8.8 billion won figure by presenting evidence per scholarship program, it was revealed that the 160,000 recipients were not the actual number of recipients but those who participated in the scholarship program. Additionally, the calculation of the 8.8 billion won figure lacked sufficient explanation regarding the cumulative period of scholarships and other criteria.
