Cuban-born baseball player Yasiel Puig was scheduled to go to trial in Los Angeles federal court late last month to face charges of making false statements to federal agents and obstruction of justice.
But his agent, Lisette Carnet, confirmed that the trial has been moved to August, and that Puig suffered a legal setback last month when U.S. District Court Judge Dolly Gee, who is presiding over the case, denied a defense request to compel evidence from prosecutors. Carnet claims that the evidence sought would prove “selective prosecution” based on race.
“Judge Gee did indeed deny the request for evidence which I understand has legal parameters but which I believe is also another example of the unfairness of our system,” said Carnet in an email. “The Judge has to make decisions based solely on those parameters, but how are we to prove selective prosecution if we are denied access to possible evidence?”
Carnet also called the prosecution of her client “nothing short of a witch-hunt” and that “many people are going to be shocked when they see the truth on how (Puig) was charged, and the realities behind the government’s wrong assumptions.” Carnet even predicted that the August trial start date could be pushed back further.
