A YouTuber who uploaded false videos about the Gwangju Democratic Uprising in 1980 and the Itaewon crowd crush has been referred to prosecutors. Police obtained a court decision for pre-indictment collection of all profits earned through the false videos.
The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency’s cyber investigation unit announced on the 21st that it had non-custodially referred a male YouTuber in his 20s, identified by his surname A, on charges including false communication under the Telecommunications Business Act, violation of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising in 1980 Act, and defamation of the deceased.
A is accused of posting 34 videos containing false information about the Gwangju Democratic Uprising in 1980 and the Itaewon crowd crush on two YouTube channels he operated from his residence between March and May.
In one video, A claimed, “5·18 was a riot instigated by North Korean troops.” He also asserted that the Itaewon crowd crush was “not an accidental incident but a meticulously planned and staged performance.”
Police have been operating a task force to crack down on the spread of false information since October of last year. The Busan cyber investigation unit discovered A’s YouTube channel during fake news monitoring and launched an investigation.
Investigations revealed that A knowingly continued to upload the videos to boost views and profits, even though he was aware the content was false. He also used generative AI in producing the videos.
