Yummy Crab Seafood rectifies minimum wage issues - KREM.com

A new restaurant caused some speculation on social media about how much its servers were being paid. Now, servers are getting paid what they're entitled to.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A new restaurant in Spokane caused some speculation on social media about how much its servers were being paid.

Yummy Crab Seafood on Division Street just opened on Monday. The manager says that it was all a big miscommunication that they were paying their servers below minimum wage.

When newly hired Yummy Crab servers went to training last Monday, they were under the impression that they would only get paid $4 an hour plus tip.

According to the restaurant's manager, Zongli Chi, that's what he communicated to his new hires because he wasn't aware of Washington law.

"I do apologize from the very beginning. We did have a misunderstanding of laws and stuff, but we try to fix immediately," said Chi.

Chi says as soon as he found out how much to pay his servers, he made that change.

"I got a communication on Monday morning, so we immediately told all our servers," said Chi.

Keyona McDuffie was one of the new hires.

She says when she found out how much they were going to pay her, she told restaurant management it was illegal.

"He showed me a weird screenshot, I don't know what for," said McDuffie. "I was like, 'Okay, that's cool but that's illegal.' You can't pay us $4 an hour. This is the state of Washington. It's the highest paying state in the states."
