The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe wants a vibrant insurance fraud office following an upsurge of insurance fraud, which even includes the recent police discovery of a syndicate staging road accidents, making false police reports, and then claiming from insurance companies, hitting them for thousands of US dollars.
The accident fraud came to light after police separately arrested seven suspects in Harare who are linked to the scam.
Police recovered fake ZRP date stamps for several officers-in-charge of traffic section centres, which the suspects were using to forge documents to claim money from insurance companies.
In a statement, ICZ said: "A couple of years back, ICZ came to the public advising of plans to set up a dedicated insurance fraud office in the wake of an upsurge of insurance fraud as also confirmed by IPEC, the regulator.
"The Zimbabwe Insurance Crimes Bureau (ZICB) is now operational. The bureau has provided the short-term insurance sector with a tool that will provide a means to measure the impact of fraud to our economy. The bureau shall be launched in due course."
