When the ball dropped at midnight on Jan. 1, 2023, hundreds of bills from state legislatures across the country silently became laws as Americans were celebrating the beginning of a new year.
While state laws can have effective dates throughout the year, January is a common time for new enforcement to start. The fresh batch of 2023 laws covers topics ranging from quirky to serious, with many addressing subjects that are dominating American discourse. All of them, however, will impact the applicable state’s citizens in some way, shape or form.

Below is a selection of interesting state laws now in effect – featuring a variety of policy areas and spanning the major regions of the country – and what their implementation will mean for residents.
Alabamians are no longer required to have a permit in order to carry a concealed gun, as long as the weapon is not “brandished.” House Bill 272 going into effect means there are now 25 states with permitless carry laws, according to the U.S. Concealed Carry Association.
