2023 Provost's Forum to Feature Keynote by Data Scientist and ... - Duke Today

Feb. 17 forum offers an opportunity for in-depth consideration of ‘Big Problems in Big Tech’

The 2023 Provost’s Forum examining “Big Problems in Big Tech” will feature a keynote address by data scientist and Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen.

The February 17 forum will include sessions in Penn Pavilion and Page Auditorium, and is free and open to all, with pre-registration required.

Following her keynote address, Haugen will join Nita Farahany, the Robinson O. Everett Professor of Law & Philosophy and director of Duke Science & Society, for a discussion on whistleblowers and the culture of the tech industry.

The forum will also feature an examination of the promise and perils of ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies, featuring industry professionals and scholars from Duke and other institutions. Small-group lunch conversations moderated by Duke faculty members will provide attendees the opportunity to discuss what individuals can do to ensure accountability and oversight of technology platforms and their impact on our everyday lives.

The 2023 Provost’s Forum is being organized by a university-wide steering committee co-chaired by Farahany and Abbas Benmamoun, vice provost for faculty advancement and professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and linguistics.
