4 Investigates: Governor wants President Trump to respond to DEA whistleblower claims - KOB.com

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham says she wants federal accountability after allegations that Drug Enforcement Administration agents let hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills reach New Mexicans.

This comes after a DEA whistleblower claimed agents watched fentanyl pills get sold in New Mexico while building bigger criminal cases.

The governor first called for accountability 9 days earlier. The DEA is not commenting beyond saying a new investigation is looking into the allegations.

“I think the President is going to be very interested in this problem – and my sense of it is – he’s going to be willing to do something. We’ll see if I’m right,” Lujan Grisham said.

“I want the President, I want Susie Wiles, I want Stephen Miller, I want someone from the Department of Justice in the room. Because this is that serious, and I believe that this protocol exists,” Lujan Grisham continued. “They need to show me that it doesn’t. And I believe that we have a chance to save lives all across the country.”

4 Investigates found the protocol the governor referenced. The 2019 fentanyl protocol said agents should make reasonable efforts to prevent distribution of fentanyl as soon as practicable.

After the whistleblower raised the allegation in 2023 and said the DEA was allowing drugs to be sold in New Mexico, the wording changed in the 2024 protocol.

The newer language allowed investigative teams to use discretion on when to take action.
