Hungarian elections had continued to dominate the disinformation landscape on the eastern flank of the European Union ahead of the 12 vote. However, while central Europe is still dealing with the fallout from revelations of cooperation between Hungary and Russia, the Baltic states are facing more pressing issues-drone incidents and the reporting on them distorted by Russian propaganda.
Russian interference in the Hungarian elections?
Russian interference came to the centre of Hungarian public discourse in mid-March after VSquare and the Financial Times, citing anonymous sources, reported on the details of a Russian disinformation campaign aimed at keeping Viktor Orbán in power.
Sergei Kiriyenko, Putin’s deputy chief of staff, also linked to Russian attempts to interfere in the Moldovan elections, may be responsible for the operation according to VSquare.
The campaign could be carried out by a Russian communications firm close to the Kremlin and Kiriyenko, the Social Design Agency, which has already been responsible for disinformation campaigns, such as Doppelganger, the Financial Times reported.
