A year after Jan. 6 Capitol attack, majority of Americans expects violence after future elections, poll shows - masslive.com

Nearly two-thirds of Americans expect violence from the losing side of future elections, according to a CBS News poll coming almost a year after former President Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in a deadly, failed attempt to halt Congress from sealing President Joe Biden’s win.

Out of 2,036 respondents, only 38% expect the losing side in a presidential race to concede peacefully, while 62% said they foresee “violence over losing,” according to the poll. Conducted by YouGov in the final days of December, the CBS News survey highlighted broad fears of a rise in political violence and links between those who believe false election claims and those more likely to say violence might be justified.

Of those who expect violence after the next presidential race, eighty-two percent of Democrats said they would not favor it from their side, compared to 67% of Republicans. When asked if they’d favor violence if they lost, 30% of Republican respondents said “it depends” — that’s double the number of Democrats who hinted that certain conditions could justify violence after an election.

Last Jan. 6, with Congress poised to certify Biden’s decisive Electoral College victory, Trump supporters raided the Capitol and called for the execution of lawmakers including Vice President Mike Pence, whose role was to preside over the ceremony.
