AG Alan Wilson's office files correction of false statement made by Murdaugh's defense - WCIV

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — Attorney General Alan Wilson released a filing Wednesday calling out Alex Murdaugh's defense for stating that Murdaugh passed a polygraph with flying colors, when in fact he did not submit a polygraph on the murders at any point before or after the first trial.

In the filing, it reads that the statement made by Dick Harpootlian in court on Aug. 14, where he said, "I will tell you Mr. Murdaugh passed a polygraph, flying colors," was categorically false. The state claims that the false statement on the polygraph was said for no other reason than to attempt to prejudice the court and public.

Wilson did state, however, that at the time of the filing's release on Aug. 19, he was made aware of a different polygraph test that was conducted on Murdaugh without his knowledge by the FBI in October of 2023. The questions asked in that test, though, only covered Murdaugh's financial crimes, to which he pleaded guilty in both state and federal court.

Additionally, he failed the polygraph questioning his financial matters, with results reportedly showing that Murdaugh was attempting to use possible countermeasures against the test.

In his response to the state's filing, Harpootlian released a statement saying that his false claim about Murdaugh mistakenly conflated several facts and was overall incorrect.
