AI forgeries fuel phishing, fake expense claims - 조선일보

Bloomberg News reported on the 14th, local time, that the hacking group "Kimsuki," suspected of being linked to the North Korean government, used ChatGPT to create forged copies of South Korean military identification cards, according to an investigation by South Korean cybersecurity firm Genians. It was reported that the North Korean military utilized ChatGPT’s image generation feature to create the forged identification cards. The forged identification cards were included in phishing emails aimed at instilling a sense of trust in the targets, and instead of attaching actual images, the emails contained malicious code capable of stealing data from the recipients’ devices. The phishing targets were South Korean journalists, North Korean human rights activists, and researchers, with the email sender addresses appearing as "mil.kr," making it seem as though the South Korean military was the sender.

Recently, as AI has made it too easy to generate accurate images, cases of exploiting this technology have been increasing. Not only is it being used for North Korean military hacking, but there are also successive cases of office workers forging receipts to submit as proof to their companies or falsifying photos and videos to make false reports to public institutions.
