A bill that would place safeguards on AI developers, with whistleblower protections and other measures to stem catastrophic risks, was approved Tuesday by a California Senate panel.
Sen. Scott Wiener (D) authored the measure (SB 53), a slimmed down version of his failed 2024 legislation. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed the latter bill in September, claiming it was too burdensome for the state’s dominant AI industry.
The pending legislation would provide whistleblower protections for AI workers and would establish a computing platform giving academia and the public access to resources for ensuring the safe buildout of the technology. ...
