Alabama fishing tournament fatal crash: Company disputes ‘blatantly false’ account in lawsuit - AL.com

A fishing tournament production company being sued for a fatal collision during an Alabama event has accused a victim’s estate of presenting “blatantly false, inaccurate, and misleading allegations” about the conditions under which the crash occurred.

In a filing responding to a wrongful death lawsuit from the estate of one of the three people killed in the incident, Major League Fishing says that it should be indemnified from responsibility and that the case boils down to the question of whether an individual boater “was operating his boat in a negligent or reckless manner.”

The fatal collision occurred the morning of April 16 on Smith Lake in Cullman County, during an event that was part of the Tackle Warehouse Invitationals tournament series. Flint Davis, a Georgia man competing in the tournament, was piloting a Nitro bass boat that collided with a center console boat operated by Gary Holcombe, a fishing guide. Several other people were on Holcombe’s vessel, and three of them died: Joey Malone Broom, 58, of Altoona; John K. Clark, 44, of Cullman; and Jeffrey C. Little, 62, of Mississippi.

A lawsuit on Broom’s behalf was filed in May, targeting three parties. They are Major League Fishing, tournament competitor Davis and fishing guide Holcombe.
