Albany County wants to employers to be upfront with salaries - WRGB

Albany, NY (WRGB) — Job seekers in Albany County may soon have a leg up.

The Albany County legislature is moving forward with a proposal that'll require companies to list the salary ranges in their job posts.

The proposal was introduced Monday night.

The legislators behind the bill say that not only is the aim to make job searching more transparent, but also to improve pay equity and give job seekers a better opportunity to negotiate their wage.

The proposal would amend the Albany County Omnibus Human Rights Law to require employers to provide the minimum and maximum salary or hourly wage for any job positions they’re looking to fill.

To make sure people are treated fairly and, particularly, situations like these unfairly impact people of color and women,” said Carolyn McLaughlin, Albany County Legislator representing District 1.

According to the U.S. Census data, in 2020, women earned .83 cents to every dollar earned by men. The gap widens more for women of color.

“When you post a job, post the salary range associated with this, and so therefore I’m going to apply for the job based on your posting,” said McLaughlin. “And when I fill out your application, I shouldn’t have to fill out a box that says I made X number of dollars an hour or year.”

However, one Albany business owner tells CBS6’s Briana Supardi that he disagrees with the proposal.
