This month’s election results were rough for Democrats, and especially progressives: Terry McAuliffe’s loss to Glenn Youngkin; the unexpectedly tight finish in the New Jersey governor’s race; the defeat in Minneapolis of the amendment to replace the police department with a new Department of Public Safety; the election of a centrist mayor in very liberal New York City; and a number of other Democratic losses throughout the country. All of this has yielded nonstop punditry on the long-term demise of liberals.
At the same time, progressives are reviewing the impact of having to split off the bipartisan infrastructure bill from the proposed federal Build Back Better legislation and the need to make numerous modifications to that bill to have any chance in the Senate. Clearly, many progressives are licking their wounds over their inability to achieve so much of their agenda.
In stark contrast, we should recognize that over the last eight years, New York City’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, and his administration have successfully implemented a series of very liberal, groundbreaking and transformative social justice programs.
He implemented universal, full-day pre-K public education for all 4-year-olds — a program that now serves about 70,000 youngsters and their families. In addition, there are now 30,000 3-year-olds in full-day public school programs.
