Arizona Sen. Wendy Rogers faces censure after calling for public hangings, attacking Ukraine's president - The Arizona Republic

State Sen. Wendy Rogers, R-Flagstaff, faces a censure vote Tuesday in the Senate by Democrats and her Republican peers for statements at a conference for white nationalists that supported violence.

Kim Quintero, spokesperson for the Senate Republicans, confirmed that a censure vote will occur Tuesday afternoon when the Senate meets.

Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Glendale, a leading Republican critic of far-right rhetoric, said Senate President Karen Fann called him last night asking if he would support a censure.

"I said 100 percent, yes," Boyer said, adding that he believes enough Republicans will join with Democrats to successfully censure Rogers. Senate Minority Leader Rebecca Rios, D-Phoenix, said the plan was for Fann, R-Prescott, to join with Democrats in the censure.

Fann declined to comment until the Senate gathers this afternoon.

If Fann, Boyer and all 14 Democrats support the censure, lawmakers would have the 16 votes they need to approve the censure.

Arizona law doesn’t define a censure, but it is commonly defined as formal statement of disapproval.

Rogers' speech to the white nationalist group, calling for public hangings, and her comments on social media over the weekend attacking the president of Ukraine amid the violent invasion of his country prompted discussions among her peers about what, if any, disciplinary action to take.

As those discussions have taken place, Rogers pushed back against her own party.
