Opposition MP Karol Aquilina has filed a police report after the government’s nominee, Anthony Borg, revealed that he did not report a police officer who offered him a bribe when he scrutinised his development application a number of years ago.
Borg – who is presently a member of the Planning Commission that deals with applications made in sites located Outside the Development Zone or in Urban Conservation Areas, made the revelation on Wednesday, as he faced Parliament’s Public Appointments Committee in its first meeting since the general election.
He was set to succeed Vince Cassar as the chair of the Planning Boar, but his nomination was ultimately scuppered by the very first question made, by Nationalist Party MP Karol Aquilina – who told the committee that he would be informing the police about what had happened.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday morning, Karol Aquilina explained that after the meeting he tried calling Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà, however, he did not take the calls. He then turned up at the Police Headquarters, and was informed that Gafà “was too busy” to see him. He then filed a report at the Financial Crimes Investigation Department and urged the police to treat Borg as a whistleblower.
Aquilina stressed that this was a case of a public officer trying to bribe another public officer. He explained that before the grilling the Opposition insisted that its MPs are provided with a nominee’s criminal record, police conduct and a person’s file...
