Australia States Place Limits on Secret Recordings by Workers - SHRM

The ability to record conversations at work seems ubiquitous these days, and so too are the laws limiting when employees may or may not record such conversations. In Australia, there is no federal law that prohibits the recording of private conversations. Each state and territory in Australia has its own legislation governing the use of recording devices.

In most jurisdictions in Australia, it is illegal to record a private conversation using a listening device without the consent of all parties involved.

However, in Queensland, Victoria, and the Northern Territory, it is lawful to record a conversation without the other party's consent, provided you are an active participant in that conversation.
