Kottayam: The AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy) Ministry has taken stern action against those who proffered fake attributes to medicines to gain profit.
The ministry has identified that trend to promote fake medicinal products through market false claims have grown unwarranted in recent times. As the importance and credibility of AYUSH treatment units have increased, some private pharmaceutical manufacturers have come up with false claims about their medicines.
In the wake of these findings, the AYUSH ministry has directed the state governments to take action against attempts to deceive consumers using provisions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, Rules 1945 and the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act, 1954.
A the same time, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has also been directed to ban the airing of misleading advertisements. These matters will also be monitored by the Advertising and Standards Council of India.
From 2018 to 2021, the Pharmaco Vigilance Unit reported that 14,876 incidents of unwarranted claims by pharmaceutical companies were identified in the country. Grievances Against Misleading Advertisements (GAMA), a portal managed by the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs has also received a lot of complaints about the matter. In 2020-21, a total of 339 complaints about false claims were registered on the portal.
