Banglafact detects fake claims about Australian senator's remarks about Bangladesh - Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

The misinformation alleges that the senator called for the restoration and protection of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh after the 2024 mass uprising, which BanglaFact has confirmed to be fabricated and baseless.

According to BanglaFact's digital investigation, Senator Richard Di Natale has made no recent comments on Bangladesh.

The video clip being circulated actually dates back to August 13, 2018, when the then Australian Greens senator expressed concern in the Australian Senate over reports of extrajudicial killings by Bangladeshi security forces, involving more than a hundred deaths within a few months.

In the 2018 Senate session, Senator Di Natale said:
"In recent months, Bangladeshi security forces have killed more than one hundred people. Members of the Australian Bangladeshi community have directly raised their concerns with us and want the issue to be raised in Parliament. We again remind the UN Human Rights Commissioner's call that extrajudicial killings must stop immediately. Bangladesh is our regional neighbor, so I hope the government will show courage, encourage proper justice processes, demand the immediate release of political prisoners, and assist in the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region."

Further verification by BanglaFact's research team revealed the official transcript of Senator Di Natale's speech on the Australian Parliament House Senate website, confirming that the session was held on August 13, 2018.
