BASKING RIDGE, NJ - Bernards Township Board of Education has replaced its long-standing attorney.
Matthew J. Giacobbe, principal partner in the law firm Cleary Giacobbe Alfieri Jacobs, based in Matawan and Oakland, was hired May 8 through the 2023-24 school year at a fee of $175 per hour and $90 for all law clerks and paralegals.
The contract was awarded without competitive bidding as a "professional service" under provisions of the local public contracts law.

The vote was unanimous.
Giacobbe attended the May 8 meeting and was notable for crisply notifying public speakers when their three-minute allotment for making comments had been reached. At one point, he chided a voice from the audience when a would-be speaker was stopped and told she would have to make non-agenda-related comments later in the meeting.
“Don’t call out from the audience,” Giacobbe said. “It is not appropriate. This is a board meeting,” adding she would have her chance later in the meeting.
Giacobbe succeeds John E. Croot, Jr., a partner in the law firm of Adams, Stern, Guttierrez, Lattiboudere, based in Woodbridge and Marlton. Croot was last appointed May 23, 2022.
