I wrote a column recently about health insurance scams, including incessant robocalls with bogus offers for improved Medicare benefits.
Victims of health insurance scams may pay more than they need to for insurance or find out they don’t have full coverage health insurance when they need it, which can ultimately impact their health.
The FTC has published an alert about common health care scams that can have an even more direct and negative impact on your health, including products and treatments that don’t work as promised, if at all. The alert cites these lies that dishonest companies tell:
- They say one product cures lots of different diseases and health problems.
- They use fake endorsements from patients or doctors claiming “you’ll get miraculous results.”
- They say you’ll “get results in 30 days or we’ll refund your money.”
- They say their special product will cure your condition.
- They say you have to “act now.”
- They use phony, scientific-sounding terms or refer to prestigious prizes, like the Nobel prize.
I’ve written columns about FTC actions against companies that made false claims their products could help users overcome smoking, alcohol and drug addictions; cure arthritis and other orthopedic ailments through stem cell treatments; lose weight wearing magnetic rings; and cure diabetes by taking dietary supplements concocted from herbs and plants.
