Bipartisan Senate Committee Advances Major Whistleblower Protections for Government Contractors
WASHINGTON – The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs unanimously vote to advance the Expanding Whistleblower Protection for Contractors Act, landmark legislation co-sponsored by Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA). The bill would significantly strengthen protections for federal contractors who expose waste, fraud, and abuse.
Specifically, the legislation extends protections to whistleblowers reporting contractor misconduct that occurs internationally, restores the right to jury trials for whistleblowers alleging retaliation, and empowers Inspectors General to pursue disciplinary action against those who retaliate. The bill also closes a loophole that excluded some government contractors, like single-employee federal contractors, from anti-retaliation protections.
“This bipartisan legislation fixes the glaring loopholes that have left federal contractors vulnerable for too long,” said Maya Efrati, Government Accountability Project’s Director of Legislation and Congressional Affairs. “With trillions of taxpayer dollars going to contractors, honest employees deserve the security to speak up when they witness waste, fraud, or abuse.”
