The family of John Barnett, the Boeing whistleblower who took his life last year, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the former employer, accusing the company of pushing him to his death through harassment and intimidation.
The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in South Carolina, claimed that Boeing subjected Barnett to a “campaign of harassment, abuse, and intimidation” after he raised serious safety concerns about the 787 Dreamliner assembly process at the company’s Charleston plant.
Barnett, who had worked at Boeing for nearly three decades, retired early in 2017 after suffering from depression and severe anxiety. Following his retirement, he became a whistleblower, speaking to journalists about safety lapses, including metal shavings near critical control wires and faults in onboard oxygen systems.
His family alleged that the company retaliated against him by giving him poor job reviews, assigning him undesirable shifts, and publicly blaming him for production delays, which affected his ability to transfer to another plant.
