Boeing workers face uncertainty amid looming layoffs - The National Desk
RENTON, Wash. (KOMO) — Thousands of Boeing workers are beginning the workweek with uncertainty about their job security after the company announced plans to cut 10% of its workforce.
The news comes as contract negotiations between Boeing and the union representing 33,000 striking machinists remain at a standstill, despite mediation efforts.
The machinists, who have been on strike for more than a month, have already faced significant challenges, including the loss of company health care and missed paychecks.
But now, the threat of thousands of layoff raises the hurdles for the striking works by a significant factor.
On Friday, Boeing revealed that approximately 17,000 positions will be affected by the layoffs, impacting executives, managers, and blue-collar workers alike. The company also plans to end production of the 767 cargo jet in Everett.
Boeing's CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company has incurred losses of $25 billion since 2019, grappling with safety issues, whistleblower reports, and intense scrutiny over company culture during congressional hearings.
Many workers on the picket line expressed frustration and uncertainty about the future.
"I think they're playing a game," one of the striking workers outside a Boeing facility in Renton, Washington, told KOMO. "It's a cat-and-mouse game. They're not doing what they need to do."
Boeing has declined to provide specific details about the timing and locations of the impending job cuts.
