CALIFORNIA, USA — California Attorney General Rob Bonta is continuing his investigation into plastic bag manufacturers who claim their bags are recyclable when, in fact, they are not.
On Friday, October 17, Bonta announced a lawsuit against three plastic bag manufacturers and a settlement with four others following a statewide investigation revealing widespread false claims about whether plastic bags sold in California are recyclable.
Bonta’s office filed suit in San Francisco County Superior Court against Novolex Holdings LLC, Inteplast Group Corp., and Mettler Packaging LLC alleging the companies sold billions of plastic carryout bags falsely labeled as recyclable.
“For far too long, major corporations have profited by misleading Californians about so-called recyclable bags that end up in landfills or the environment,” Bonta said in a statement. “Our investigation makes clear that no company is above the law.”
According to the complaint, the companies sold more than 4.3 billion bags since 2016 to major grocery and retail chains, including Target, Safeway, Walmart, Ralphs, and Trader Joe’s. The lawsuit contends the companies used the “chasing arrows” symbol and other recycling claims that misled consumers into believing the bags met California’s recyclability standards when, in reality, the vast majority were never recycled.
