Navy leadership has acknowledged the service is facing a significant and ongoing recruitment crisis and a lack of personnel. It has been trying to attract new recruits and retain skilled staff but has faced serious difficulties.
The documents obtained by the Ottawa Citizen noted that efforts to kick White out of the naval reserve were temporarily on hold while his grievances related to Officer X and the failure by the chain of the command to take action are examined. But the records also indicated that the navy leadership is eager to get rid of White.
White had previously written to defence ministers Anita Anand and Bill Blair about the actions of Officer X and outlined the threats and reprisals he and others have faced for reporting the actions of the senior officer. White also warned the ministers that efforts were underway to kick him out of the Canadian Forces in an effort to stop him from raising his concerns.
But Blair responded that wasn’t the case. “I understand there is no intent from the Naval Reserve to recommend your release,” Blair wrote on April 17, 2024, the day White was to testify in front of the parliamentary committee. “Be assured that I also understand that there has been no discussion about initiating an administrative review questioning your suitability for service.”
