(ZENIT News / Rome, August 9, 2026).- False abuse claims and accusations are no longer rare occurrences. Consequently, Catholic dioceses in the United States and Europe are reinforcing legal tools to respond to fraudulent allegations of sexual abuse, while protecting themselves and genuine victims.
False accusations have turned abuse claims against the Church in the United States into a multi-million dollar business. In a 2020 investigation, David F. Pierre claimed that such accusations account for 94% of the total. This statement was reported and published in “The Greatest Fraud Never Told.”
One such case involves the Archdiocese of Chicago, which secured a favorable court ruling in Illinois allowing it to take legal action against individuals accused of orchestrating a scheme of false sexual abuse allegations. These alleged claims were coordinated to obtain financial compensation, exploiting the Church’s practice of initially crediting the accounts of abuse victims.
A recording of a prison phone conversation — in which one of the perpetrators described the false charges as a source of «easy money» — revealed to the Archdiocese a «breach of trust» by those who manipulate the system used to handle genuine cases.
Additionally, a court in Padua, Italy, convicted an individual of defaming two priests from the Diocese of Treviso; the person had falsely accused the clerics using fabricated details that damaged their reputations, as reported by ZENIT on June 30 of this year.
